I have been trying to build the tremolo audio unit that is in the xcode developer tutorial http://tinyurl.com/26gb97

And it works good in AU lab on my desktop intel g5 with tiger and xcode 3; however, when I compile it for my powerbook it does not seem to register as an Audio Unit.

when I compare the get info with reaktor.component I noticed that reaktor is of kind component where as the tremolo is of kind xcode document. Do you think this is what is causing the problem, and if so how do I fix it?

grr -- having much difficulty building even the simplest plugin for Firefox in C++

I feel so stupid. I'm a professional C++ developer, and i've been doing it for years and years. Now I have to write a Firefox plugin (NPAPI) in C++, which sounded easy enough, but after 2 days, I just can't get anything built. The documentation on developer.mozilla.org is often very confusing, a lot of info doesn't seem to be there at all, and i'm growing more frustrated by the day. This is _supposed_ to be easy. Writing an ActiveX control using the ATL in C++ for IE is dead simple to me (i've done it literally dozens of times over the years), but writing a plugin in C++ for Firefox is proving to be quite a frustrating endeavor. Searching the archives of the Mozilla dev-tech-plugins list only shows a few others complaining like I am, with no responses offered. The samples in the mozilla tree don't seem to build much of anything, no DLLs / bundles are generated on Windows / Mac OSX (the two platforms I need to target the most) ... sigh.

Can anyone point me to a code sample (hopefully simple for the obviously brain-dead developer I am) for a Firefox plugin that is known to build on Windows and OSX? What steps did you take to build it, and how did you install it?

Regards,

John

struct proc and sysctl(3)

I'm trying to use the sysctl function call to get a process table. It kind of works, but p_pctcpu is always 0, even for processes which are consuming a lot of cpu time, such as backupd.

First, does sysctl work? It must since that is how ps is implemented. Can I see the source code to ps somewhere?

Second, there are lots of references to something called 'struct proc' but it isn't defined anywhere. There is an extern_proc structure, but no proc structure. mystifying. How does it work?

Anyone know any good interface tutorials for Xcode 3.0? I'm a bit lost transitioning from 2.1 to 3.0. Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise I'm holding a book open to compare options between 2.1-2.4 and 3.0 as well as a webpage showing where to find the placement of new tools and old ones alike. Allot was integrated and made intuitive, but I can't find anything and my workflow has come to a grindingly slow pace.

There's a weird, unknown program making a random noise at a specific time. I could probably find the program through trial and error and watching acti ve processes. But it got me thinking, If I wanted to find out when a specific output such as audio out or a printer port were utilized, what tools could I use?

Any resources would be appreciated or tool ideas. Thanks in advance.

Shark?

Hello, all ...

I'm working on an internet application that runs on Windows and Mac OSX. It's written in C++ (the only real choice for cross-platform applcations that run natively), so 99% of the source is common across both platforms. However, i'm seeing some very different performance characteristics between them, so I fired up Shark to try to see where the OSX version is spending all of it's CPU.

After sampling "Time Period (All Thread States)", it tells me that 50% of the time my app is running, it's calling the BSD select() call. This makes sense -- we're always trying to talk to other nodes on the network, and we use select() to determine which other nodes are ready. The thing is, this same code runs on Windows, but while it uses 3% or so of the CPU on my Windows box, it uses 12% or more on my Mac (dual 2.3ghz G5). The Windows version also calls select() under the same circumstances (this is all common code to both platforms), and i've always considered select() not so great on Windows (as i'm sure MS would rather have us using MS-specific APIs like WaitForMultipleObjects()), so I was surprised to see what appears to be select() working much better on Windows than OSX.

So i'm wondering if i'm using Shark correctly. How am I actually supposed to use it? I point it at my process, select Time Period or Time Period (All Thread States), thinking that it will show me the percentage my code spends in any particular section, but ... well, I can't deliver a new kernel with the app, so optimizing select() is not an option, so i'm wondering ...

Regards,
Applescript dialog trouble

I'm just getting started playing around with Applescript and I seem to have run into a small problem.

I'm asking a yes/no question and I want to do either continue the script or return to the main loop depending on the answer, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong - any suggestions would be most welcome.

The code:

if warn_before_sending is "yes" then display dialog "does this work: " & "" buttons {"No", "Yes"}

if dialog reply is "No" then
set update to "No"
else
set update to "Yes"
end if

if update is equal to "yes" then
display dialog "UPDATING YES! : " & update & return
end if

Any ideas what I'm missing?

Thanks!

Help: Xcode Projects Appear As Folders And Will Not Open

Hi there,

I had a hard drive crash and re installed. I had a copy of my xcode project on a thumb drive, and copied it onto my new laptop drive so that I could work on it in my newly installed xcode.

But alas, the project appears as a folder titled 'thefakenameofmyapp.xcodeproj'.

When opened it contains .pbxuser files for everyone who has worked on it, and a file called project.pbxproj.

It will not open in xcode and none of the files inside of it change or open anything (except launching xcode).

I have heard of this happening on machines who don't have xcode installed, but xcode is installed in the default location on the drive and there is a developer folder with everything intact.

I can open xcode and create projects.

I just can't open my old ones.

Any ideas?

silly statfs() question

Hello, all ...

I'm trying to determine the amount of free space on the disk ... normally, the statfs() POSIX call does this, but the OSX version doesn't seem to handle 64-bit file lengths (those longs in the statfs struct indicate this). On AIX, statfs64() does this, and I do see vfsstatfs() in /usr/include/sys/mount.h on OSX that has int64_t types, but is this the way to do it on OSX?

Any help would be appreciated!

Regards,

So when I was younger... (like 10 years old) i'm 30 now...

I first had an Apple ][+ and I began my programming life on that...

When I got older, I got a PC... and I've been a serious PC developer for a loooong time... written big websites and all that... i'm a serious database guy..

Anyhoo.. so I'm working on a website/application with a friend of mine.. and I thought... "This would be great for mac users".

And I got a Mac Mini!

I've had it for a couple days, and I LOVE IT...

I love that my computer doesn't look like NASCAR when I first hook it up (there is only software I need, not 4 ISPs and 5 MP3 programs with 2 CD burner progs, etc.)

Anway... I'm eager to learn how to develop on my mac... and thus complete the 20 year cycle of going from Apple to PC to Apple...

how to determine resource attached to kevent.ident?

Hello, all ...

I'm playing with kqueue / kevent to determine the limits of server scaleability using this method. I've a dumb question, though -- when I get a kevent, its' ident field has the source of that which sourced the event e.g. a file / socket / pipe / etc. How do I arrive at the filename / socket / pipe from that identifier?

I feel like this should be in "BSD 101", but i'm still clueless.

Port carbon app 2 quartz

I have been working on an open source program that is used to scan and edit player piano rolls.[1] This is an outgrowth of a much larger effort.[2]

I started this back in the 8.1 days on a powerbook 5300. This is the version posted to my website.

About two years ago I started porting this to carbon due to a bug in the MIDI code what caused playback to stutter when run as classic under X, I fixed this problem last fall, upgraded to a mac mini only to learn that Quickdraw has been deprecated under 10.4!

Spent the last few weeks reading the apple website. I have been unemployed for about three years, so can not afford overpriced books that rehash what is on the website and in the mailing lists and groom the ego of the author. Have been programing for nearly 30 years (since 1977) so I consider myself a fairly advanced programmer. There are a lot of options. A lot of different directions of where to go next.

What I am looking for is how to simplify all the choices I have at this crossroads. The functionality is.

1) Using custom hardware and a USB bulk interface, read in the background image of the piano roll. This image is about 4k across by several hundred thousand bytes high. A physical piano roll unwound is the width of a sheet of paper about the length of a football field. I need to open this image display it zoomed to fit the width of the screen. I need to scroll this image and change the zoom. Currently this is done by using off screen Gworlds and a complex tiling operation.

2) The underlying image needs to be distilled into the smaller "event" database that represents the holes punched in the paper. This database represents a much coarser matrix. Currently this is done by reading the pixels inside the Gworld to create regions which are stored into the database. This database is used to display a grid of 'Event data" that overlays the underlying piano roll image. This is done by displaying the current GWorld background, then drawing lines on top of the background.

3) the user must be able to click on the region to highlight an "event" The event can be dragged. The "Event" also maps to a MIDI note. In a separate mode clicking on the event plays that MIDI instrument.

4) the user can convert the MIDI "events" to a file which can be played, with the background scrolling automatically. The active MIDI note events should be highlighted.

5) non linear filters can be applied to the underlying raw image bitmap. The results of these transforms can create new files or updated graphical representation.

It is self evident that I should use Quartz. This brings up should I continue with Carbon or Take the Plunge into Cocoa. To be honest, I am not a fan of OOP programming. I come from the school that pointers are 12 bit ints! Just like a PDP-11. That I can do what ever I want with a pointer into my database. (I realize that there is a bit of sarcasm here.)

That said, I would really like some sort of framework that allows me to open an images and do all the messy zoom, scrolling stuff. 10.3.0 compatibility is important as I have a number of G3 systems I use for hardware development. Is there some sort of SDK that I can use so I do not have to re-write years of effort? It is important that I can access the pixels as a simple array, like in a Gworld lockbits context. I may need to look at a pixel and the pixel above it and do a non linear transform to the pixel below it. Or perhaps 2 pixels below, plus 3 over. Currently this is all working and has been for a number of years.

Next issue, Overlays. Most of my professional experience was programming postscript. (why I am unemployed, I was one of Apple's printer postscript gurus.) Currently I use Quickdraw, to draw the regions onto the background as a separate layer. This is all done in my window update proc. I am having a problem finding out some sort of sample code that shows how to do this with Quartz. With Copybits I am in the same context as the lines I want to draw. Interesting enough, I had to go to a lot of trouble so that my graph origin was in the lower left (where it belongs) I am not looking forward to re-writing years of code development. So here the question is what is the best way to access the individual pixels that underlay the graphics visible on the screen? Is an alpha channel all I need? Can I have different layers of overlay displayed with different color by using an Alpha channel?

Literally I wasted several years, writing a filter to standard file, so that I could open an image of any sort and assign which brand of piano (or other instrument like an organ or even a player violin) it was from. Nav Services broke a lot of what I had written as it is difficult to open a piano roll image without additional data. I finally got this working when I learned of the QuickDraw deprecation. I mean, that was the heart of mac! I can not believe that even that is now obsolete too.

Now I want to learn what is most the most probable way to keep this program maintainable. I really would like to stay with standard C, at the same time I would like to be able to compile this for dual fat intel binaries as the case may arise. Can I use standard C and build in the mach environment? Or is objective C the only way to program for the future?

I am able to use one of the USB I/O kit examples, to access my scanner and read in a line of raw image data into an array.
This is a command line tool. It seems to me that the next task is to convert this array into a Quartz abstraction. But which one?

What is the best way to add a window into the command line tool? What libraries do I need to add to this existing Xcode App in order to access Quartz using standard C? As a starting project I want to see here is a real time window that shows the bits scrolling inside a user scalable view port. This should update in real time as close to the 1Mhz 1 bit per cycle update that the scanner can produce. The scanner will bust about 4Kbits of raw bits every 3.8uS. Currently I am writing this data to a Standard C array. Now I want to see it real time. Easy to do this with copybits. How to do this with Quartz? Must be able to run under panther.

I realize That I have rambled a bit, that there are a lot of questions. I need to find some foundation again. I have too many choices of which way to go. Yes, I am looking for some sort of hand holding. Just enough to keep the ladder from slipping out from under me.

I've been working on getting a good handle on Mac development through Xcode, Cocoa and Objective-C. I've had the O'Riley books, Learning Cocoa and Building Applications in Cocoa, for a few years but I just now have the time to begin regirously learning to program for OS X. I've also just picked up Programming in Objective-C by Kochan which was recommended to me by a friend.

Are there any other newbies out there in this group that would like to work together on some learning project, exchange tips and help with the learning process? If there is enough interest maybe we could make our own tribe as I know how annoying it can get for the pros to have to contantly listen to the same newb questions over and over again. lol

Endian issues

I am in the process of porting some C code with quickdraw over to Carbon/Quartz.

The files that the app reads are created with dos on intel using some sort of Basic, I think it is called Q basic. The format uses the Intel endian to write the 16 bit ints to the file. The application is a datalogger and I have no control over the written file format.

My mac app, in order to read the ints from these files, has to byte flip in order to load the ints into the array in a correct order. The data is run length and the records are of variable size.

Given that hardware is changing to intel endian formats, Is there a C function I can use to read the ints from the file and let the system do the byte flip? I loose a lot of time flipping millions of ints.

OSX equivalent of /etc/init.d?

Hello, all ...

I've been developing on OSX for years now (as a generic *nix machine), so I feel kind of embarassed that I don't know this, but ...

... on a Linux machine, I can usually control services from the shell by running something in /etc/init.d. So, I can ssh into a machine as root and control services that way. How do I do this on an OSX machine, though? VNC is out of the question -- i'm not interested in doing this with a GUI at all -- it has to be done via a shell over ssh.

Regards,

Pyobjc

If you have a choice of programming languages for OS X development, I recommend looking into Python. Using the Python-ObjectiveC bridge "pyobj", you can access all of Cocoa's power from Python (including InterfaceBuilder).

I've been a Cocoa developer for many years (starting in the days of NeXT), and just recently tried pyobjc. Its a great productivity booster, and a much more humane way to code.

Haven't found too many glitches or hiccups, but you have to code and design carefully. In particular modal sheets don't interoperate well, and I had to do some straight ObjC coding to work around.

Widget coding help

Does anyone know where i can find a dedicated forum about tiger widget programming ? I'm trying to find help on how to make a input field in a widget display it's results in a web browser and not the widget itself. I already got the forms working via html but the results display in the widget space which is not what I want to happen. I want that to be passed on to safari (or whatever the default web browser is). I know the url opening example in the dashboard programming guide (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppleApplications/Conceptual/Dashboard_Tutorial/index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001340) has something do do with getting this done but I don't quite know how to implement this code in the context on a standard html form.

Any help or tips would be very appreciated. Thank you.

MediaBrowser framework, iView MediaPro photo provider hooks?

Just got Pages of iWork fame. It's got a clear indication of Apple's intention w/ the 'digital hub' notion: a 'media browser' that allows fast access to all your iPhotos, movies, etc for placement in documents.

I, like many photographers, don't use iPhoto as it is too limiting. I'm interested in how iPhoto acts as a 'source' to this system, and providing a plugin to iView MediaPro for it. Apple hasn't released docs, but it's usually possible to figure this stuff out. Anyone with any knowledge or interest in working on it?

(PS: Good place to start is /Applications/iWork/Pages.app/Contents/Frameworks -- iWork has its own MediaBrowser.framework. I expect this to be part of iPhoto 5 or 10.4, but for now it's wrapped inside Pages.app)

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Apache on OSX and the www-data user?

Hello, all ...

I'm developing a bunch of stuff for work, and we're targeting Debian Linux and (in the near future) Cygwin. However, since I am one of the principle developers, and I do everything on my PowerBook, I am making sure our stuff also runs on OSX (two other members of the team also have PowerBooks / iBooks, but so far they haven't been brave enough <snicker> to do this).

Anyway, this stuff involves some CGI, and we want the CGI to run as the www-data user (the default on Debian). However, the OSX Apache installation doesn't have a www-data user. My questions are thus:

1. what user does Apache run CGI stuff as under OSX?
2. how could I make this more like Debian?

I would like to have one Makefile handle all of the different platforms (doing unames where appropriate, but trying to minimalize any differences as much as I can).

Regards,

hey guys. I'm bored with just about all the chat programs out there (believe you me, i've tried just about all of 'em) so, I've decided to build my own. The problem is, I have no programing experience whatsoever, so the going is slow. Right now, i've got a pretty decent mockup done in Interface Builder, I have IM services (writen by the developer of Proteus, which allows that program to connect to the various services.) Icons are coming along quite well. also. I've got a partner in the coding area of things, but he hasn't too much time on his hands. Basically, if any of you are interested in helping out, it would be much appreciated. Email me at decidedly_zach@hotmail.com, post tips here, or join the forum newim.tribe.net
Thanks guys

Where to start?

So... I'm relatively new to Mac - having had my G5 single for just over a year now.

I'm fairly comfortable with the system in general and I would like to start programming for it.

I am currently a Coldfusion developer, but have in the past worked in other languages, mostly on the C64 (that certainly dates me).

I've been hunting around online and I've read a few favorable reviews of Building Cocoa Applications (By Simson Garfinkel, Michael Mahoney) from O'Reilly. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/buildcocoa/index.html

Is there anything else I should read/look at/flip through before I dive in?

Thanks!

Thomas.

need help on an opensource crossplatform media (2d/3d/audio) engine

hi list,

I already have the OSX version running (using XCode 1.5)
but I am still new to OSX programming, so if there are any experienced
OSX developers willing to put some time (or advice) in, then that would
be kewl.

basically its a media framework (API) used to build media editing applications. On OSX it is currently using FLTK and OpenGL for UI and
JackOSX for audio. There is also an VSTI (Cubase VST Instrument)
build of Orkid on OSX, but its a little behind the win32 port.

Up front, I can think of 5 immediate needs in the OSX port, CoreAudio Support (MIDI/Audio), AudioUnit Support, UI tuning (FLTK/OpenGL),
OpenGL tuning, and VSTI bug fixes (sync to win32 build). Or if anyone wants to replace FLTK with Aqua, than thats kewl too (I wont be doing that myself , too busy on other things ;> ).

The engine's web page is at http://www.tweakoz.com/orkid/
the page describes what the engine can do, along with screenshots, etc..

You will need XCode 1.5 to build.

thanks,

Hello, all ...

OK, I adore OSX and Macs -- i've a 450mhz G4 Cube, a dual 1.25ghz G4 tower, and a 1.33ghz 12" PowerBook G4. They're great ...

... except when I leave for a day and come back to find that the dual 1.25ghz box has decided to go away and not come back, again. It can't be pinged, pressing a key won't wake it up, I can't ssh into it, and it's basically hard-boot time. This happens way too often for a *nix machine (esp. when the Cube's uptime is longer, which rules out a power outage), and i'd like to find out what the culprit is. Looking at /var/log/system.log doesn't show anything (no entries since the last time I brought it up and this time). Where else can I look to get some clues as to what is bringing this machine down?

Hello, all ...

OK, so i'm mostly a C++ (and lately a lot of Perl) person, but i'm downloading a ton o'stuff from the iTMS, and a lot of the stuff is, imho, put in the wrong genre. For instance, I want to change a lot of stuff labeled "rock" to "metal".

So, does anyone know where I can find a description of the iTunes AppleScript interface, and maybe examples of how to use it? I'll gladly, happily, jovially learn AppleScript just so I can scroll through the "metal" genre on my iPod and not have it be embarassingly empty ('cuz so much of it is (mis)labeled as "rock") ...

Repository locations

When installing a major OS upgrade, it's best to do a clean install.

Because of this, and for performance, I try to keep everything I can OFF of the boot drive. I have separate partitions set up for Apps, for user data, for large media files, for caches, and other things. This also helps since I have to be able to test on multiple OS's and I like to have most of my files and apps readily available in each one.

I often see recommendations that CVSROOT be set to locations such as /usr/local/cvsrep. I see that /usr/local can be a good place to share things among multiple users. But its just one more place you have to remember about when you switch OS.

Is there some advantage to having your repository be on your boot partition, or is my method of placing it on a different partition really a better solution that just never occurs to anyone writing articles in magazines?

Anybody know where to get official mac icons? I need a ton, including the aqua account man, "compose" and "reply" from mail.app, delete, ical, and anything else that you'd expect from a guy building an app.

By the way, i'm also looking for logo/icon designs. the app is called Palaver, and it is a chat client.

... looking for a user account on a G3 and G5 box?

Hello, all ...

I am involved in porting a systems framework that is available on x86 (Linux and Windows) to PowerPC (OSX and Linux). Some of this porting requires the use of PowerPC assembly, and i've successfully tested these parts on my PowerBook G4 12", and my dual-G4 desktop. Still, I would very much like to test them on G3 and G5 boxes.

So, what i'm asking for is a basic user-level account (I don't need admin rights) on boxes I don't have -- namely those based on G3s and G5s. The box needs to be running Panther or a recent PPC Linux variant, and needs to have a recent toolchain (gcc3.3 or above), and I need to be able to get to it via ssh. I won't need to use it often, only for the occasional compile and test to be sure the port works on those CPU types.

Yes, I could buy an old G3 iMac and set it up in the corner, but I already have too many pooters around here! Would anyone be able to do this?

Regards,

John

Anybody else using XCode? I just started with it and really like it so far.

I would be using Emacs, at least for editing, but can't get it to run on Panther. Got a weird compile error on my home network that I didn't get on a cafe network! Too bad I can't lug my G5 to the cafe. And too bad my laptop version won't launch on the G5.

Odd indeed.

Crash Logging

Moving back to Cocoa after working with Java for a while, I forgot how awful exception handling is in ObjC. A potential nightmare even. Anyhoo, I found this handy undocumented feature which produces a crash log when an app goes down:

To have a crash log shown automatically, instead of "Unexpectedly quit" dialog, type this (Panther onwards):
defaults write com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType crashreport

To turn that off, type this (Panther onwards):
defaults delete com.apple.CrashReporter DialogType

10.3 and SysV messaging?

Hello, all ...

I've not got 10.3 yet, but i'm anxious to snarf it for AIO (async I/O, like other *nixes or overlapped I/O on Windows) calls. I've a question, though. What does the following say under 10.3:

[prompt:~]man msgctl
[prompt:~]locate msg.h
[prompt:~]grep -rI msqid_ds /usr/include

... basically, I want to see if 10.3 does SysV messaging. Under 10.2.x, the man page _says_ it do, but it seems to be wrong.

Regards,
